The front cover of the bible say “John Sawyer 1788”
This bible’s original owner was the father of the eminent surgeon and medical practioner – John (James) Sawyer. He was married to Georgina.
Handwritten inside he lists their children, and much later two notes have been added to indicate two of the children’s deaths.
The inscriptions are as follows:
Childrens Ages.-
Georgiana Margaret Ann Sawyer, born January 4th 1831 – Baptised February following. Christened August 21st 1832.
Mary Sawyer.- born July 24th 1832. Christened with her sister August 21st 1832.
Eleanor Sawyer.- Born October 14th 1833. Christened 14th November 1833. [died 28 May 1912]
Henrietta Sawyer. Born June 9th 1835. Christened 7th July 1835.-
Boy ----- 19 June 1838 still born.
Edith Kate Sawyer born 13th August. Christened 10th September 1839 [died 24 April 1912]
Boy ----- 10th Feby., 1841 Still-Born
Ann Sawyer Born Octr. 24th 1842 and Christened Novr. 19th 1842
The family are record living in St.Georges, Hanover Square, Middlesex in the 1841-1861 Cenuses. The bible is very big and heavy, and inscribed Southwells Family Bible on the spine.
